About Kefalonia

Kefalonia forms part of the Ionian Islands, also known as The Eptanisa (Seven Islands) and is the crown jewel amongst the surrounding gems of Corfu, Lefkas, Ithaca, Kythira, Zakynthos and Paxos.
At 907sq km it is the largest of the Ionian Islands, but home to a relatively small population, estimated at between 36 - 40'000 permanent inhabitants.

Surrounded by a sea that is a multitude of turquoise and blue hues that you thought could only be a figment of the imagination, Kefalonia quite literally has it all: History, culture, spectacular scenery, soaring mountain scapes, beautiful Blue Flag beaches, secluded coves and bays, traditional Greek villages, fantastic food & locally produced award winning wines all topped off with the famous Kefalonian hospitality.

This Greek paradise remained largely un-discovered by the masses, until Hollywood invaded in 2000. The film, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, was filmed in it's entirety on the island which ultimately acted as a perfect showcase for the islands natural talents putting Kefalonia on the 'must see' destination map.

Kefalonia has retained its natural beauty, charm and most importantly traditions having become a highly popular destination over the past few years, not only with the British, but also the Greeks themselves and the Italians.

It was voted fourth in a top ten of the perfect places to live in Europe by the influential Forbes Magazine which could explain why some of the worlds most famous 'A' listers have taken vacations here away from the prying eyes and lenses of the worlds paparazzi.

The island has endured many invasions over thousands of years with civilisation dating back to around 40'000BC with occupancies by the Myceans, Byzantians and the Venetians who in particular left their mark on the island in the form of huge fortresses and their elegant style of architecture.

However, the devastating earthquake of  August 12th, 1953 which virtually obliterated the island destroyed much of this beautiful architecture and the original buidlings of Kefalonia remain few and far between.

But, it more than makes up for this in stunning natural beauty, underground caves and lakes and a kaleidoscope of colours from the gold of the blazing summer sun that shines from around April to November, the dark greens of the Cypress and Fir trees that dominate many of the mountains that rise majestically from the abundance of groves where lemon, orange, grapefruit grow alongside olives and the vines that produce the islands amber nectar - the famous Robola wine. Along with this there are the sticky sweet figs and the delicious honey infused with the aromatics of thyme and heather. A bountiful feast if there was one for the Gods.

Grey cliffs plunge dramatically towards red and bleached sand & shingle beaches that disappear into the crystal clear Ionian Blue and Turquoise seas that are just waiting to be explored above and beneath.

It is an island of contrasting landscapes, fragrances and colours just waiting to be discovered and explored and will without doubt leave an indelible mark on your mind and senses.
